Young’s block fossicking area enhancement project

This project aims to create an environmental maintenance plan for the Young’s Block Fossicking Area site. It will also create and undertake works relating to invasive plant control and improvement in erosion controls and social amenity.

The area currently offers fossickers and nature lovers the opportunity to visit the site and enjoy bird watching, bush walking and gold fossicking, however it’s currently in a poor state of repair due to heavy over-grazing and extensive weed issues.

The project will decrease erosion by the installation of whoa-boys and water diversion away from affected areas and tracks, decrease the abundance and density of invasive plants such as Chinee Apple, Rubber Vine and Bellyache Bush and increase visitor enjoyment through reseeding of treated areas with native species.

Controlling Weeds in the Big Bend Reserve

An infestation of weeds at the 162ha Big Bend Recreation Reserve has increased dramatically since the severe Burdekin River flood of February 2019. This project will control the weeds and create employment for a small group of environmentally minded people, making the reserve a more appealing site for the many locals and tourists who visit each dry season.

The project will significantly reduce the weed seed spread to downstream riparian areas and cattle properties.

Best management practices for wildlife conservation in grazing lands of the Queensland Dry Tropics

The project aims to improve the general awareness of graziers in the Dry Tropics region of the potential of grazing land for wildlife conservation.  Through several activities, the project will highlight that wildlife represent a very valuable asset to their lands and can be used as a tool to identify healthy country (i.e. fauna).

It will define the best management practices for wildlife and diffuse knowledge into the community through the publication of a booklet and a workshop.  Several producers will be engaged through active implementation of recommended grazing practices for conserving wildlife and appropriate habitat.

From the Co-Ordinator…

“We are developing a ‘Grazing for Biodiversity’ booklet which covers both flora and fauna specific to our catchment, with a component of grazing in these systems.  We will have a mini book launch/workshop. Register your interest by clicking the button on the right.”
