What Heather Learned: Agrifutures evokeAg 2020
Dalrymple Landcare Committee’s Heather Jonnson recently travelled to Melbourne for evokeAg 2020. Here’s what she learned…
Two days 1300 delegates, 22 countries with a combined knowledge of 19,500 hours, emerging ourselves to discover what’s next in the agrifood tech space: everything Food, Farm, Future in the heart of Melbourne.
The evokeAg experience allows networking opportunities for farmers, researchers, investors, entrepreneurs, corporates, government and more. This dynamic group immersing in values for agriculture to be more sustainable, resilient, dynamic, responsive, profitable, competitive, more respected and effective in how we will feed our hungrier, choosier customer in a more unpredictable world.
In this tech space I had to learn a bit of a ‘new language’, a combination of entrepreneur mindset and start up lingo.
I share with you a few terms:
BHAG – Big Hairy Audacious Goal, the giant sweeping vision of a startup founder to change the world.
Bubble – Describing an industry that does not realise that it might be overvalued and over-inflated. When a “tech bubble” bursts, it means that a lot of startups go bust and investors lose their money.
Burn Rate – the monthly negative cash flow from a startup.
Deck – A presentation that covers all aspects of your business in a succinct and exciting way.
Ecosystem – As with an ecosystem in nature, a startup ecosystem has its food chain. There are hunters, the herd and the bottom feeders.
Freemium – You give your basic product away for free and then try to upsell other features to your customer.
Growth hacking – A term first used by Sean Ellis (Dropbox) to describe a marketing technique that focuses on quickly finding scalable growth through non-traditional and inexpensive tactics such as the use of social media.
Runway – How long a startup can survive before it goes broke; that is, the amount of cash in the bank divided by the burn rate.
Waterfall – The order in which investors (and everyone else) get their money out on an exit. Usually this is “last in, first out.”
With a full media presence at the event I will share with you some links to articles, interviews, podcasts and videos.
